A Sea of Love

I was on the phone, sharing with my friend Vicki, about my Mom’s upcoming wedding.

My Mom, who is 77 years young is getting married this weekend.  She has been a single mom for more than forty years.

I was telling Vicki how happy my Mom was and how the feelings this wonderful man has for her has transformed her.  The next words out of Vicki’s mouth captivated my spirit.

Vicki said; “it’s like Ezekiel.  When you are in ankle deep, it feels only odd, cold and uncomfortable.  Then you step on in a little farther, up to the knees and think…hmmm.  This still feels odd, and I am not sure about it, but I am going a little deeper.  After some time, you are in over your head, swimming in the love…and it becomes better than you could possibly imagine, the best thing you have ever known in your life.”

When she said these words to me, I remembered a dream God had given me years ago.  It was a simple, one-scene dream.

In the dream, I was swimming in very deep water.  Laughing, splashing, floating and happier than I had ever been.

This is the place Vicki spoke of, the sea of His awesome love.

I pondered on her words and the dream most of the day.

I realized when we are in ankle deep, in God, this is when we are first born again.  It is all different and we think we are ready to step in and live the life the Bible tells us to.  However, when the water of His word hits us, we realize we still have some of our old habits.  There are many things we need to get rid of.  This is the place we first encounter God’s love.

Hebrews 12:6-7 says; For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises everyone He receives as a son. Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?

The first aspect of His love we often encounter is His discipline.  If we refuse His correction we will not be able to go deeper in Him.  In His love, He corrects us.

If we receive His correction and allow Him to change us, we step deeper in God.  Into this wonderful place of His manifested presence and power.  The place where we begin to get a taste of His Spirit working in us.  Our prayer life becomes deeper.  We desire for God to continue to change us.  To cause us to be more like Jesus.  Walking and talking like He does.  This is a wonderful place.  But it is not the final destination.

As we continue to go deeper and deeper in God, we find a place of total dependence on Him.  A place where we choose to lay down our plans, and pick up His way of doing things.  It is the end of self-effort.  A place where we willingly give Him the reigns of our life.  Where we can say like Jesus; “I only do what I see the Father do and I only say what I hear the Father say.”  And where we can, again, like Jesus say; “Satan may be coming, but he will find nothing in me.”

This is the place where we have gone so deep we are in over our head.  We can no longer walk on our own, we can only swim.  Totally supported by Him and His word.  This is the place of better than you could possibly ever imaginethe best thing you have ever known in your life…that my friend spoke of.

Swimming in the sea of His abounding love.

This is the place I long for.  This is the place I am searching for.  This is the place I am determined to attain.  Swimming in the sea of His abounding love.  All of Him, none of me.

Meditate on this:

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.  1 Chronicles 16:34
