Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30
This scripture has been on my mind a lot this week. I love how the Amplified says it.
Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.]
Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet for your souls.
For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good—not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne.
I love that Jesus says as we come to Him, He will give us a blessed quiet. Blessed means to empower – therefore He will give us an empowering quiet. Isn’t that awesome!
As I mediated on this verse for a few days, I began to search the scriptures it referenced. To my amazement, the main reference was to another scripture I love, found in Jeremiah 6:16.
Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls.
In John 14:6, Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life. He alone is the way.
Are you feeling burdened today? Or even worse, over-burdened? If so, there is a place you can run to and find blessed, empowered quiet for your soul. That place is Jesus.
He has given this open invitation. We don’t have to make an appointment, the door is always open and He is always waiting and willing to carry our burden. Most of us know this to be true. However, like many of us, I have found the hardest part is to give it to Him and leave it there.
Yet, Psalm 55:22 says, Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
1 Peter 5:7 says, Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
I don’t know what your burden is today, but I do know this – it is not yours to carry.
Jesus died so you didn’t have to carry it. Oh, I know we think we have to fix it or work it out or do something about it – but that is a lie from the devil. The first thing we need to do is COME UNTO JESUS WHEN WE ARE BURDENED AND HEAVY LADEN and then He gives us rest. In THAT rest, our answer will come.
We must continually look for the old path – where the good way is. There we find rest, in Jesus, for our soul. For He alone is the good way.
I am praying for you today – that you enter into that blessed, empowered, quiet for your soul and that His peace washes over you like rain, as you seek the old path, the good way, Jesus.
