Over and again, I have heard people say, “I don’t know why this is happening to me…I am a tither, there shouldn’t be lack in my life.”
While I understand they are saying this because of the scripture in Malachi 3, I believe it is only partially true.
Let’s look at Malachi 3.
Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings [you have withheld]. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, this whole nation! Bring all the tithes (the tenth) into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you [so great] a blessing until there is no more room to receive it. Then I will rebuke the devourer (insects, plague) for your sake and he will not destroy the fruits of the ground, nor will your vine in the field drop its grapes [before harvest],” says the Lord of hosts. “All nations shall call you happy and blessed, for you shall be a land of delight,” says the Lord of hosts.
“Your words have been harsh against Me,” says the Lord. “But you say, ‘What have we spoken against You?’ You have said, ‘It is useless to serve God. What profit is it if we keep His ordinances, and walk around like mourners before the Lord of hosts? Malachi 3 (Amplified)
Yes, God does say if we faithfully tithe, He will open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing we can’t contain. Yes, He does say He will rebuke the devourer for our sake. However, I believe if the only thing we do is tithe…we will not see the fullness of God’s blessings for the tither. Why?
Because tithing, as with everything in the Kingdom of God, is a heart matter. An issue of the heart. If your heart is not right, there’s always a problem.
God doesn’t need your money. He desires your heart. He desires a relationship with us. If we tithe and then say, “this is not working, I am a tither, and I am not seeing the results” then we are speaking harsh words against God. And…those words are laced with doubt and unbelief. They are actually revealing what is truly in our heart.
I am not saying it is easy – I personally know it is not. I went through a long, and I do mean, years long season when lack was prevalent in my life. Loss and lack was all I could see with my natural eyes.
During that time, I made up my mind concerning two things.
One, I refused to stop tithing and giving.
Two, I refused to question God.
I stood firm on His truth and continued to do what the word said I should do. He brought me out of that difficult season. Though I am not yet where I desire to be – I am a long way from where I was. All praise for that belongs to God.
If you are a tither and you are not seeing the results the Bible says belongs to you, pray and seek God. Ask Him if you are simply going through a season of testing. Or, if there are things in your heart that needs to change. And if there are things that need to change, humble yourself and be willing to change them.
Giving is a heart issue. Worship is a heart issue. Serving is a heart issue. All things in the Kingdom of God are heart issues – when we get our heart right, everything else will fall in line.
When our heart aligns with God, we will never again need to say, “this is not working.” For then we will know and understand that all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose. When our heart aligns with His, we will think and see as He thinks and sees. And we will reap the benefits of His word, as our hearts unite with His.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21
