Flower-Beds-cut-back-300x225Over the weekend I was thinking about contending for the promises of God. As I was thinking along these lines God reminded me of an instance with Bryson that happened a year or so ago. I want to share it with you today.

Bryson was playing a game online. I don’t know if playing is the right word, it was not exactly a game but an app Breanne had purchased for him to help him learn different brain skills. It is an app full of puzzles and things you have to figure out…and it was quite challenging for Bryson.

You see, he is used to being very good at games, especially computer games. He usually picks each game up quickly and excels at it.

He started this puzzle app she had purchased and it was not easy for him to do. He was having trouble getting through the first level. He continued to try to figure out the puzzle but over and over he was getting it wrong. He was stuck and he didn’t like it.

He said ‘Nana, this is really hard, I can’t figure it out.’ I said ‘Bryson, keep trying, don’t quit, pay attention to the directions and keep trying.’ He said ‘but it is so challenging.’ I replied ‘Bryson, it is through the challenging things that we grow.’

As those words came out of my mouth I knew they were quite true. Not only in life but spiritually speaking as well. It is, indeed, through the challenging times we grow.

I love when life is easy and everything is going smoothly with no resistance or challenges…I think we all do. However, it is in those times that I have to press my way through something that I experience true growth.

Jesus said ‘in the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.’ Tribulation means pressure, oppression, stress, anguish, adversity, crushing, squashing, squeezing and distress.

The Bible says we will go through times of pressure, oppression, stress, anguish, adversity, squeezing and distress. We will all go through those times BUT Jesus didn’t stop there – He said ‘however, be of good cheer, I have overcome for you.’

Through these times of distress and difficulty, we must be careful to remember that we already have the victory because Jesus has overcome for us. It is already done – we only need to stand firm on the promises of God and stand until we see the promises fulfilled.

I would love it if we were all delivered from every difficulty, however, it doesn’t normally work that way. Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego were not delivered FROM the fire, they were delivered in the fire.
Joseph wasn’t delivered the moment God gave him the dream….it was many years later and after many challenges and times of pressing and distress.

Sometimes we must contend for the promises of God. Sometimes we must press through and trust God regardless of what we feel, hear or see. We have to stand in the face of the enemy and say ONLY what God says UNTIL we see the promise fulfilled. That’s what I want to encourage you to do today – contend for the promises of God. Say what the word of God says about your situation knowing that it will not return void but the word will accomplish what it is sent for….every single time….if you stand on his word.

I think about the children of Israel. God told them he had given them the Promised Land, he told them it was theirs for the taking….all they had to do was go in and possess it. It is the same with us, we have much that was purchased for us at the cross, it is ours, we have been promised victory – it’s ours for the taking. The choice is up to us. Will we quit or will be press past the challenge and walk in our inheritance? I believe the Lord has spoken to me to press in through the month of May – that is my goal and purpose for this month… I say press in and possess what is already ours – I hope you do too!
