Over the weekend, my sister, daughter, and I visited a quilting store out of town. We have only been there a handful of times – but it is one of our favorite places.
While driving home, I said to my daughter, “I love going there. It always amazes me that they know all our names and call us by name.”
On our drive we discussed them knowing our name. I shared how it made me feel to shop in a place where they knew my name. I shared how it made me feel welcome and safe. I also shared how it always reminds me of a little dog we once found.
One day we were driving home when we discovered a small dog in the middle of the road. He was far from houses and seemed to be lost and afraid. Of course, Breanne picked it up and began to search for the owner. This little scruffy dog shook with fear. He didn’t know us, and he felt afraid and unsure of these people who rescued him. Unfortunately, it took us an entire day to find his owners. This little dog shook with fear all day long. Finally, his owner saw our flyer and called. While on the phone they told us his name. Breanne looked at him and said, “So, your name is Scruffy!” That little dog began to wag his tale and jump up and down. He was no longer afraid. He knew he was with someone who knew his name and he felt safe.
All these things went through my mind as I thought about my day. Isaiah 43:1 says, “But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”
Peace washed over me as I thought about this truth. God knows my name.
Jesus knows my name. Holy Spirit knows my name. Therefore, there is NO reason to fear, regardless of what is going on around me or in this world.
We live in a time where fear is being shoved down our throats at every turn.
Every. Single. Day. Yet, God tells us 365 times in the word of God – DO NOT FEAR. Why? Because He knows our name. I don’t know about you, but I take great comfort in the fact that God knows my name.
Let’s look at some of the promises for those who know God and whom God knows.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those who take refuge in Him. Nahum 1:7
The Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; for you have found favor in My sight and I have known you by name.” Exodus 33:17
But if anyone loves God, he is known by Him. 1 Corinthians 8:3
Nevertheless, the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal, “The Lord knows those who are His,” 2 Timothy 2:19
My friend, make no mistake about it. The Lord knows those who are His. Not only does He know them, but He will never leave them nor forsake them. He gives His angels charge over them. He surrounds them as with a shield. He watches over His word to perform it in their life. All this is good news but the best news of all is you are one of them and I am one of them.
God knows our name. For that reason alone, we can walk in peace every day of our life. For that reason, we can feel safe and secure knowing He knows us, and we know Him. We are in this world, but we are not of it. We live in a different kingdom, and we must live like we do. We cannot become entangled with the fear and anxiety of this present season. We must keep our eyes on God and His word. And we must never forget, He knows our name. May we find great comfort in that truth.
