In the Presence of Your Enemy

I was listening to a song today, actually watching and listening on youtube.com, that I want to share with you.  If you haven’t heard it, you certainly need to.  And you need to hear the story that goes with it.  Here are the lyrics.

I raise a hallelujah, in the presence of my enemies
I raise a hallelujah, louder than the unbelief
I raise a hallelujah, my weapon is a melody
I raise a hallelujah, heaven comes to fight for me

I’m gonna sing, in the middle of the storm
Louder and louder, you’re gonna hear my praises roar
Up from the ashes, hope will arise
Death is defeated, the King is alive!

I raise a hallelujah, with everything inside of me
I raise a hallelujah, I will watch the darkness flee
I raise a hallelujah, in the middle of the mystery
I raise a hallelujah, fear you lost your hold on me!

I’m gonna sing, in the middle of the storm
Louder and louder, you’re gonna hear my praises roar
Up from the ashes, hope will arise
Death is defeated, the King is alive!

Bethel Music, Jonathan David Hesler

As I was listening, I thought about the 23rd Psalm.

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will well in the house of the Lord
Forever.

God does not promise to take us away into a hidden corner to eat of what He has for us.  Actually, He says He will prepare our table in the very midst of our enemies.  It is in THIS place that we must stand firm.

I love what the song says;

I raise a hallelujah, in the presence of my enemies
I raise a hallelujah, louder than the unbelief
I raise a hallelujah, my weapon is a melody
I raise a hallelujah, heaven comes to fight for me

He praises in the presence of the enemy telling him that he is defeated.

He praised louder than the unbelief that is attempting to overtake his mind.

He praises and allows his song to be his weapon of choice.

And then…heaven comes to fight for him.  And for you.

What do you do when you hear a bad report?  What is your initial reaction?  When the giant of unbelief stands before you – what words come out of your mouth?  What is your weapon as you stand before the enemy or sit in his presence?

The Bible says, “out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”  What is coming out of your heart today?  Do you believe the word of the Lord?  Or has fear overtaken you?

I hate fear.  It is the tool of the enemy.  And it is an enemy of the word of God and the promises of God.  However, we do not have to walk in fear.  We don’t even have to allow it into our midst.  The Bible says if we resist the devil he must flee.  Always, always resist fear.  Give it no place in your life, or your heart.

Look again at the words of this song;

I raise a hallelujah, with everything inside of me
I raise a hallelujah, I will watch the darkness flee
I raise a hallelujah, in the middle of the mystery
I raise a hallelujah, fear you lost your hold on me!

Fear must lose it’s hold on us before we can gain victory.  Fear is really faith in what we believe the enemy can do.  Don’t put your faith in him – keep your faith firmly in God and His word.  He will not fail you.

My friends, when the enemy shows up – it is not time to cower down – it is time to raise a hallelujah…in his very presence.

Mediate on this:

Great is Your faithfulness God.  Deut. 31:6
