You can only hear a statement so many times before it gets your attention.

This is what happened to me last week, when Kelita would continually say ‘what have you done today to grow your faith?’

One day I wanted to respond ‘are you kidding me! I am writing motivations, studying for those motivations, I am continually growing my faith.’ But that would not be a truthful statement. For you see, I can work for a ministry and still not grow my personal faith. That is entirely up to me and it is quite personal.

My friend was referring to a book she was reading, Planting the Heavens by Tim Sheets. And he was referring to the familiar scripture found in Matthew 17:20.

Matthew 17:20; And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

I am sure we have all stood on this scripture and confessed ‘I have faith the size of a mustard seed, therefore this mountain has to move.’
You know me and you know I fully believe in confessing the word of God. But what do you do if the mountain doesn’t move?

Jesus gave us the answer to that question, in the same verse, if our mountain doesn’t move it is because of our unbelief.

Unbelief in this scripture is the word ‘apistia’ which means unfaithfulness, mistrust, lack of faith, little or small faith, negative belief, uncertainty, lack of confidence in power and to hesitate.

In other words, if we have little faith, our mountain may not, will probably not, move. So, then why did Jesus say, ‘as a mustard seed?’ Well, as Mr. Sheets points out, He didn’t say the size of a mustard seed, He said AS a mustard seed.

First, let’s look at this scripture in the Amplified Bible. Matthew 17:20 says; He answered, “Because of your little faith your lack of trust and confidence in the power of God; for I assure you and most solemnly say to you, if you have living faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and if it is God’s will it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

We must, first of all, possess a living faith. A seed isn’t alive, at least not until it is planted. It does have life within it, but it must be planted if it is to become a living thing. True?

If I have a bag of apple seeds, and leave them laying on my kitchen counter, what will they produce? Absolutely nothing! They will not produce apples as long as they are lying there. There is life in them, but unless they are planted, they produce nothing.

It is the same with your faith. You must plant your faith in something and then nourish it and help it grow.

You help it grow by the environment it is planted in, make sure it is conducive to growth. You help it grow by watering it and keeping all the weeds of distrust out. You help it grow by making sure nothing is strangling your seed, such as bitterness, unforgiveness, anger, pride or fear. You help it grow by watering it daily with the word of the Living God.

Let’s now see what Jesus said about a faith that grows!

Matthew 13:31-32 says; He gave them another parable to consider, saying, the kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; and of all the seeds planted in the region it is the smallest, but when it has grown it is the largest of the garden herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air find shelter in its branches. (Amplified)

Look at this seed! It begins as the smallest of all seeds, but once it has grown, it becomes the largest plant in the garden. However, it doesn’t stop there, it grows on to become a tree that birds find shelter in its branches.

I don’t know about you today, but I want to grow my faith, so that it becomes so big that others can find shelter in the branches of my faith…and so it can and will move mountains.

If you desire mountain moving faith, it is absolutely available to you today, but, it is up to YOU alone. You must grow your faith. Mountain moving faith is within your grasp, will you press in and get it?

As my friend says, ‘what are you doing TODAY to grow your faith?’ May this become a question you ask yourself each day…’what am I doing today to grow my faith?’

Prayer for today: Father, help us grow our faith each and every day…until we have mountain moving faith. This we ask, in Jesus name. Amen.
