In Matthew 18:35 we read about a man who was forgiven of his debt, but when it came time for him to forgive a debt, he refused. When the master found this out, he threw him in prison saying ‘just as I showed you compassion and forgiveness, you should have shown the same to the man who had a debt with you.’
The scripture goes on to say; So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.
I have been listening to a teaching on this recently and I want to share some thoughts with you about forgiveness. Often on the Healing Prayer Call we will hear stories of people who have people in their life who has hurt them or betrayed them and we encourage them to forgive. They pray a prayer and say they do forgive or have forgiven them already. However, sometimes if you listen for a moment you will hear the bitterness in their voice letting you know that they have only forgiven from the head; that is not what this scripture says.
So my heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you FROM HIS HEART, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.
This type of forgiveness is from your heart, from your soul, mind, emotions, thoughts and affections….in other words if you forgive FROM THE HEART, you will no longer have bad thoughts about the person. When you see them you won’t have negative emotions about them. You won’t make judgements about them that don’t line up with what is good, pure and lovely. AND….you will, from your heart, LOVE THEM. Now if you feel all this about the person then you have forgiven them from your heart.
The most impacting statement I heard while listening to a teaching on this was; if you have unforgiveness in your HEART, if you have not forgiven from the HEART then you have given the devil the keys to your heart and your house. OUCH!
This is a hard saying, I agree. There are people in my life who have hurt me deeply and who have betrayed me over and over again, this is not an easy thing to do. But when I look at it in the light of this scripture, it becomes easy.
I know, I am fully aware that I need God’s mercy and forgiveness in my life on a daily basis, I do not want to do anything in my life or in my heart that opens my life up to a point of being judged by the word of God….especially the word of God that brings judgement. And I certainly will not give the devil a key to my heart or house.
The bible says we reap what we sow, if we sow judgement, we will reap judgement. If we sow unforgiveness, we will reap unforgiveness. If we sow mercy and love and forgiveness, that is what we will reap.
It is time for us to take a hard look at our hearts and clean up our act. If there is someone who has hurt or betrayed you, forgive….from your HEART…forgive. You don’t have to be a part of their life but you do have to love them as Christ loves you.
I want you to think of that person who has hurt or betrayed you and pray this, FROM YOUR HEART…
Father, I forgive ____ from my heart. Today I give them the gift of forgiveness and I declare they owe me nothing. I forgive them today. I confess that I have judged them and I know this is a sin, therefore I repent of judging them, please forgive me. I place the blood of Jesus and the cross of Christ between me and that sin and declare I will not reap from the law of sowing and reaping because I am forgiven for judging others. I walk free of all this today, in Jesus name.
