Today I want to talk to you about the power of prayer, it is a powerful force. James 5:16 says ‘the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.’ Let’s look at a couple of these words today.

First of all the word ‘effective’ means having the power to produce. I love that! Our prayers have the power to produce something…what? Whatever we are praying about as long as it lines up with the word of God.

Secondly, the word ‘fervent’ means red hot, earnest, excited and glowing. Our prayers should be full of passion and excitement, knowing God hears us and will answer our prayer, knowing that He who promised is faithful.

Now, let’s look at the rest of that scripture. It says the prayer of a particular man avails much, the prayers of a righteous man, one in right-standing with God. While we are made righteous through the blood of Christ, we must be living our best to please God if we expect our prayers to be answered. If you are living in sin and rebellion against God your prayers will have about as much power as your witness to others. What do I mean by that? If you are declaring you are a Christian and living in sin, others know and have absolutely no respect for what you are saying about God, your witness of God is ineffective.

I love the way the Message Bible says it: ‘The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with.’ James 5:16.

When you are living right before God, following His word to the best of your ability, great power is available to you through prayer. When you are quick to obey the voice of God then you and your prayers are a force to be reckoned with. Heaven knows it and hell knows it. Those who walk upright before God are a force to be reckoned with.

Prayer is a force. When a person is walking upright before God and spending time in prayer, they too are a force…one that God does not take lightly and one the enemy certainly does not take lightly.

As we enter into a season of prayer, let’s make sure our lives are right before God. Let’s make sure that we are a righteous people before God and man. Let’s make sure that we are, indeed, a force to be reckoned with.
