I once read an article that greatly expressed the awesome power of praying in tongues.
The article was not by a preacher or a teacher, it was by a mother. The story was shared a few years ago on Good Morning America.
The story was about a mom and her young seven-year-old son. One morning she heard a ruckus. It appeared to be a scuffle in the backyard where her son was playing alone. Startled, she went to find out what was going on.
To her dismay, a mountain lion was mauling her son. This young man was fighting for his life. No matter how he tried, he could not get away from the grip of the mountain lion. The mom said her mother/protector instinct kicked in and she grabbed hold of the lion. She was desperately trying to save her son by pulling him away from the grasp of the lion. However, she was not strong enough and she quickly found that out. Upon realizing this truth, she said, “I knew that in my own power and in my own strength I wasn’t going to be able to pry its mouth open, so I started praying in tongues. I’m just crying out to the Lord,” she said. “Three sentences into praying in the Spirit, the lion released my son and ran away.”
Oh, my word! She began praying in tongues, three sentences into praying in this manner, the lion released and ran away. There is great power in praying in tongues!
1 Corinthians 14:2 says, For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
John 16:13 says, However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak.
Ephesians 6:18 says, Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.
For this mom, and her son, praying in tongues made the difference between life and death. It can make a difference for you too. Praying in the Spirit causes you to battle from a position of victory. It is an empowerment for spiritual warfare! Victory has already been secured at Calvary. When we pray in the Spirit, we battle from that place of triumph.
In times of battle, it is easy to become weary, even in prayer. Often, we feel we have prayed all we know to pray and we don’t know what else to do or say. At those times, I thank God for the Holy Spirit. As Paul said, “for when we do not know what to pray, the Holy Spirit makes intercession for us.” Romans 8:26
Praying in tongues empowers us to agree with God’s plan of victory for our life and our circumstances. Regardless of what we are facing.
Praying in tongues does not deny reality. It positions you in a place of higher truth. To agree with a truth that is greater than what you are seeing with your natural eyes. It positions you in a place of victory. The victory, remember, is already yours, through the blood of Christ.
Today, if you find yourself in the heat of the battle and you don’t know what else to pray – pray in the Holy Spirit, pray in tongues. And remember, this mom had absolute victory by this simple truth, you can too. There is power released when we pray in the Spirit. Release that power today in your life!
