Today we celebrate Memorial Day. I am thankful for the land of the free that I live in and I fully understand that it is because of the brave that I am blessed to live in this land. I am thankful for all those who have fought and sacrificed that I could be free. I certainly don’t want to take anything away from the meaning of this day.
As I thought about this day, however, I could not help but think of the many ‘memorials’ talked about in the Bible.
A memorial is defined as that to which a memory is preserved, to be mindful of and to call to remembrance. We see in the Bible often times, when God showed up on the scene, the people created an altar or a stone as a memorial…a sign to remember that God was in this very spot.
The rainbow in the sky is a memorial of the covenant God made with man after the flood. I don’t know about you but I can’t look at a rainbow without remembering the covenant.
On this day, our American flag is a memorial of what this day represents; I can’t see the flag without thinking about the price that has been paid by many families for my freedom. It is a memorial.
We wear wedding bands and each time we look at them we are reminded of the covenant made between a man and woman. The covenant of marriage.
Memorial…that to which a memory is preserved…to call to remembrance…I love that. It makes me also think about the book of Acts. Acts 10:4 says; And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.
Cornelius had a vision of an angel and sought God for the meaning, the angel gave him the meaning. He said ‘God has taken notice of your giving and your prayers. You see, the Bible says Cornelius gave MUCH and prayed ALWAYS. Because of these two things, these things called God to remembrance of His covenant. And He came to Cornelius because of His continual giving and continual prayers. Not only did these two things call God to remembrance, but it caused God to send an angel to show up on the scene. The angel came because of his prayers and giving and granted his prayer requests, isn’t that awesome! God is no respecter of persons, He will do the same for you.
Our gifts, our prayers are just like the flag, the rainbow, the wedding ring, they call God to remembrance of His covenant with us and His word to us. It is like waving a flag and declaring ‘REMEMBER ME!’ I love that about God. Oh, I know, He could never, would never forget us. We are always on His mind, but when we give and when we pray, we are showing God that we are covenant minded also and that He is always on OUR mind as well.
Your prayers, your giving are memorials to God. They are that to which a memory is preserved. They are those things that call God to remembrance. Today I encourage you to sow a memorial seed and pray a memorial prayer – knowing your God is thinking of you today as well. It is my prayer that it will be just like Cornelius and God will send an angel to let you know that YOUR alms and YOUR prayers have come up as a memorial before Him and that HE has come because of those prayers and giving.
Remember God can’t look upon your prayers or your donations without remembering His covenant with you – just as we can’t look upon a rainbow without remembering His covenant with us. It’s an awesome thing, it truly is!

May your memorial wave today like a high-flying flag. May God, Himself, take notice this very day and come on your behalf. As God searches to and fro across the earth to show Himself strong on the behalf of those whose hearts are turned to Him, may He find you, your giving and your prayers, waving before Him and May He show Himself strong on Your behalf this day.
