I was reading about fear in the Bible this week when I heard this statement; “stop the fear!”

We see in Luke 8:40:42; So it was, when Jesus returned, that the multitude welcomed Him, for they were all waiting for Him. And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

We know this story.  Jesus was going about healing the sick when He was interrupted by this grieving father.

Jesus began to go with him to pray for his daughter.  Before He got very far, He was stopped by the woman with the issue of blood.

I am sure the father just wanted Jesus to come on with him, as his situation was dire.  However, the next thing the father heard was devastating.

While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.”  (verse 49)

I can imagine what the father felt, hearing these devastating words.  I am sure fear attempted to overcome him…then Jesus spoke.

But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” (verse 50)

What was Jesus saying?

He was saying, “Stop the Fear!”

You see, faith comes by hearing.  We all know that.  Fear often comes the same way.  By hearing a negative report, such as this one.

Fear surely gripped this father, as he heard those words, “she is dead.”

Fear can come from watching the news media.

Fear may come from a doctor report.

But to all these things, Jesus says the same words; “STOP THE FEAR!”

You alone have the ability to stop the fear.

If you choose to watch the news hours a day, I can assure you, fear will grip you.

During this Covid19 time, fear has been rampant.  In the beginning I watched the news and the daily reports from the White House.  But it was only a few days in when I had to stop feeding myself that negative stuff.  It was getting too hard to overcome.

I consider myself a strong faith person, if it was difficult for me to hear and overcome, I can only imagine how much fear people have who do not trust in God.

I also keep hearing people say, “I feel like this is going to happen or that is going to happen…”

Friends, we don’t go by our feelings, we go by the word of God.  We go by what He has said.

What if that father had turned and walked away when he heard those words, “she is dead.”  I tell you what, his daughter was be dead.  However, he listened to the words of Jesus and allowed them to be his final authority.  He wrapped himself in the words of Jesus.  In doing so, he stopped the fear in its tracks.

We can and must do the same thing.  Especially now.

Surround yourself with the word of God.  Saturate yourself in the promises of God.  Keep them before your eyes.  Shut out the negative and only believe.  He is still the same God and He will bring you to a place of breakthrough.  Stop the fear and only believe.

Meditate on this:
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.  2 Timothy 1:7
