And he brought me to the door of the court; and when I looked, behold a hole in the wall. Then said he unto me, Son of man, dig now in the wall: and when I had digged in the wall, behold a door. And he said unto me, go in, and behold the wicked abominations that they do here. So, I went in and saw; and behold every form of creeping things, and abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed upon the wall round about. Ezekiel 8:7-10

What is hidden behind the wall? What is the purpose of digging into the wall?

In this vision and instruction, God is revealing to Ezekiel why His children are experiencing misery after misery. He is showing Ezekiel why the blessing of God is not resting on the people.

I looked up this scripture last week, after a friend shared a text with me. A text she had received from another friend concerning a situation in her life. One that she had been praying diligently about.

The text said, “in Ezekiel 8:7-10 Ezekiel had a vision. In the vision the Lord had him dig a hole in the wall. Behind the wall he found idols. I believe there may be something in the spirit that is hidden in the walls of your home, that happened over the years, before you owned it. Take the oil and pray over anything that may be hidden in your house. Then breakthrough will come.”

As I read these words, the Lord began to speak to me.

He said, “what is hidden behind the walls of your heart that is hindering your blessing?”

Those words hit my spirit…hard.

I began to pray. I asked God to reveal to me anything and everything in my heart that would hinder my breakthrough in certain areas.

He went on to ask, “are there idols in your heart?” Ouch!

An idol is defined as; Anything on which we set our affections; that to which we indulge an excessive and sinful attachment. An idol is anything which usurps (takes the position of power or importance) over the place of God in the hearts of his people.

Jeremiah 17:9 says; The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

I didn’t know of anything in my heart that would hinder God. I certainly wasn’t aware of any idols in my heart. Still, I began to meditate on this and ask God to show me. He was faithful to show me.

There are many things in our life that can become an idol if we allow them to. Family, loved ones or children can become idols. Remember, it simply means that they are more of a priority to you than God.

Our jobs or ministries can become idols. How do we know? When these things consume more of our thought life than God and His word.

Money and position can become an idol. If we pursue money and promotion more than we pursue God, it can become an idol.

Finally, a challenging situation or fear of it can become an idol. How so, you may ask?

Do you spend more time thinking about the problem, than the word of God? Have you exalted the problem above the word of God? If so, it has usurped His word in that area.

1 John 5:1 says, Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

We do not worship images made of gold, like we see in the Old Testament. We do not worship other gods. But that doesn’t mean we are not guilty of putting other things before God and His word.

God and His word must be our priority. Exodus 34 says our God is a jealous God. He will have no other gods before Him. He has not changed.

Today, if you find yourself thinking more on the problem than the solution, which is Jesus Christ, stop. Put God back in His place in your life. First place. Know that whatever is going on in your life, He has the ability and the desire to change it for your benefit. And He will, as you put Him first.

Seek you first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added unto you. Seek you FIRST…God and His way of doing things. (Matthew 6:33)
Ask yourself, “is there anything behind the wall of my heart that is hindering my breakthrough?” Ask God to show you if there is. He will. He wants to bless you even more than you want to be blessed.

In the book of Ezekiel, God didn’t leave it with simply showing them what was wrong. No! He had a way to fix the problem and bring them back to Himself.

And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 11:19

This is my prayer today, for you and me. That God would show us anything in our heart that is divided. Any place in our heart that has hidden idols. Any place in our heart that is not pleasing to Him. That He would remove a heart of stone and give us a new heart and a new spirit. One that is free from any defilement. One that will completely please our Father, Yahweh. A heart of flesh, one that is pliable before Him and His word.

The walls of our hearts. What is hidden behind those walls? It is time to find out. It’s time to shine the light of the Holy Spirit behind every wall. It’s time…to remove all idols and reveal the new heart of flesh.
