One day while Breanne and Brailee, my daughter and granddaughter, were visiting, I spotted something shiny in my carpet. I leaned over and picked it up to discover it was a stone out of Braielee’s boots. Brailee has always been a boot girl, she LOVES her boots and doesn’t like to wear anything else. I walked over and handed it to Breanne, Brailee turned around to have it put back on her boot when I jokingly began to admonish her. I said ‘Brailee Faith, if you don’t start being more careful with your boots you are going to have to wear tennis shoes for the rest of your life.’ With a stunned look on her face, she quickly put her little hand over my mouth as if to say ‘don’t even let those words come out of your mouth Nana!’
Breanne and I both burst out laughing at her correction, while at the same time I was reminded of the power of words. I was reminded that there are, indeed, words that should never come out of our mouth. I was thankful to Brailee for the reminder.
Most of us are familiar with teaching on words and their power in our life. Many, if not all of us have heard a message on the scriptures found in Proverb 18:21; ‘death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruit.’ I love this scripture and I think of it often, however, there are many more scriptures in the Bible that reference the words of our mouth that I find powerful. I want to share a few of them with you today.
Proverbs 21:23 says; ‘he who guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from trouble.’ This is a powerful verse, if you find yourself always in trouble, you should check what is coming out of your mouth. Make sure your words line up with what the word of God says about the situation.
Proverbs 12:6 says; ‘the mouth of the righteous will deliver him.’ WOW! Did you realize your deliverance is in your mouth? It is, the word of God says so.
Proverbs 12:14 says; ‘a man will be satisfied with GOOD by the fruit of his words.’ I love this verse. Do you want so much good to come into your life that you are fully satisfied? Me too and it will come one way….by the fruit of our words.
Proverbs 12:18 says; ‘the tongue of the wise brings healing.’ At times words are used to hurt people. The Bible says in James 3:11; ‘from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.’ Our mouth is a tool and it should be used for blessing and never cursing. Words can hurt and injure, especially when we speak negative or hurtful things to people or to our children. Words are to be used to bring healing just as the scripture says. If God brings a person into your life who has been hurt with words from their past or their parents, it may take some time, but if you will speak words of love and affirmation to them, those words will bring healing to their soul.
Proverbs 14:3 says; ‘the lips of the wise will protect them.’ Another powerful truth – words spoken from your mouth will protect you – make sure your words line up with Gods word – there you will find divine protection.
Proverbs 15:4 in the Amplified Bible says; ‘a gentle tongue, with its healing power, is a tree of life.’ Again we see the healing power found in words….if you want to eat of the Tree of Life, you must watch the words of your mouth.
I want to reiterate Proverbs 18:21; ‘death and life are in the power of the tongue and those who love it will eat its fruit.’ There is great power, the power of life and death, in our tongue, in our words and we will, without fail, eat its fruit.
The words that come out of our mouth set things in motion, in the spirit and in the natural. Our words contain great power. If we speak the word of God and words that line up with God’s word we empower that word to come to pass. If we, however, speak words that agree with darkness, we empower darkness. We are going to eat the fruit of something…let’s eat the fruit of life and not death.
