What IS, not What If

Lofty thoughts.  What are they?

2 Corinthians 10:5 says, Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

One translation calls these imaginations lofty.

Lofty means something that is lifted up or exalted above something else.  In this scripture it would be talking about something that lifts itself up above the truth of God’s word – those are the things we must cast down continually.

Think about it this way.

What if your teenage child was an hour late coming home, what would your first thought be?

Would it be, “What if there was an accident!” or would it be, “Oh, I wonder if they stopped to pick up the items I needed at the store, to surprise me.”

I don’t know why, but our mind always goes to the negative.  Life and disappointments that have not been dealt with often cause us to view things from a different lens, a negative one.

These are the what ifs.  They are the imaginations we must continually cast down.  This comes with the renewing of the mind.

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Philippians 4:8

God makes it plain; we are only to think on things that are good and things that have virtue.  Alternative words for virtue are honesty, truth, righteous, upright.  From this we see, if things are not true – according to God’s word – we should not waste our time thinking on them.

It seems to me that more and more Christians are thinking on things they shouldn’t be in these days we are living in.

Daily I get emails or posts with something someone said.  When I question it, I hear things like, “Well, it is just what they think might happen.”  Are you kidding me! Do not waste time with things like that.  Certainly, don’t waste my time with it.

God is not in the ‘what ifs’ or the ‘it may happen this way.’  He is in the TRUTH.  If it says so in His word, it will be.

We cannot rely on what we hear on facebook or on the news.  We must firmly put our trust in God and His word.  On that, we can rely.

Don’t allow the enemy to pull you into the mess.  And don’t allow Him to deposit lofty thoughts in your mind.  Transform your mind with the word of God until the only ‘what ifs’ are words straight from the plan of God.

Next time an opportunity arises where you may ask “what if”, remember God and His word.

Remember, He is bigger than anything that comes your way.  No circumstance should be exalted above Him and His word.  There is absolutely nothing He can’t handle.  He will turn everything for your good.  If it hasn’t yet turned for your good, it isn’t over yet.  We don’t meditate on what if – we fix our mind on what is – what He says is.

Meditate on this:
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. Colossians 3:1-2
