If there is anything I know in my own personal life it is that the Word of God is full of power and alive.  It quickens things for me as I confess the scriptures over my life and the lives of those around me.  I have personally seen the Word of God produce fruit over and over in my life.

However, today I want to talk to you about a time when the Word will not produce fruit.  Go with me to Mark 4.  These scriptures are teaching us what to watch out for so that the Words of God that we are sowing will produce a great harvest.  Verse 7 tells us that some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked the Word sown, and it yielded NO crop.

Do we have thorns in the Word of God that we are sowing into our life. What is Jesus really talking about in this verse?  He explains this parable just a few verses down in verse 18-19; Now, these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who HEAR the word, and the cares of this word, the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things entering in choke the word and it becomes fruitless.

He says, “it is those who hear the Word” so He is talking about believers.  He goes on to say that one of three things will choke the Word.

The cares of this world.

The deceitfulness of riches.

Desires for other things.

I have found in my walk with the Lord, that generally when a believer is serious about hearing the Word, they don’t often have a problem with deceitfulness of riches. They believe they desire God and His Word more than other things – but the thing I think most often chokes the Word in the life of a true believer is the cares of this world.

Cares is defined as worries and anxieties.  When your cares, your worries and anxieties become bigger and appear larger to you than the Word of God, then you can rest assured that those cares have begun to choke the Word of God in your life.  Now, what happens when something is choked?  It can’t live – it has no breath, it will die.

This can be a serious problem in the Body of Christ – we need to realize this truth that when we allow cares to cause us to become anxious and worried. The Word of God will produce no fruit in our lives.  Now, that is a scary thought.

Can you think of one thing today that you are worried about?  Is your worry or anxiety for that thing growing?  Is it beginning to take over your life just as thorns do in a pile of brush?  If so, stop right now. Don’t allow the cares to choke out the Word of God for if you do, the WORD OF GOD WILL NOT PRODUCE FRUIT IN THAT AREA OF YOUR LIFE.  Stop worrying and being anxious. Instead continue to stand on the Word of God and allow it to do what you sent it to do in your life. Let it change your situation.

What does the Word say about your care?  1 Peter 5:7 says in the Amplified Bible; Casting the WHOLE of your care, all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, ONCE AND FOR ALL on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.

Philippians 4:6-7 says in the NLT; Don’t worry about ANYTHING; instead pray about everything.  Tell God what you need and thank Him for all He has done.  Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything you can understand.  His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

It is no coincidence that our Lord Jesus, wore a crown of thorns on His precious head that day on the cross.  He took your cares, your worries, your anxieties, once and for all – and He declared, “it is finished.”

Today, if you feel the Word of God is not producing what it should be in your life, check to make sure that you haven’t planted the Word of God among thorns, among cares and worries.  And check and make sure that you are not allowing thorns, cares, and worries, to grow among the Word you have sown.  Get rid of cares and worries and let the word of God do its job, produce good fruit.
