Start where you are. Do what you can. With what you have.
This week I have heard this statement or something similar in different ways from different voices. God, through these words, has captured my attention. And I am obeying His voice.
You see, God has put a few things in my heart to do that seem impossible. Yet I know, they only seem that way. Nothing is impossible with God. Therefore, He encourages me to take the first step. To start where I am, to do what I can, with what I have.
The day of small beginnings. That’s how God refers to it. No one really likes the days of small beginnings. They are hard work. And often without help. At times it is with no encouragement and little budget. Nevertheless, we must take that first step.
Zechariah 4:10 says; Do not despise the day of small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.
Do you remember when your child took their first step? How exciting was that! You cheered them on, that is what God does for us when we take that first step, when we do not despise the day of small beginnings.
First steps are often frightening but they are always without fail, necessary.
A glorious journey begins with one step.
I think back to the time when I was first born again and was learning God’s ways. I learned about giving. But…I didn’t have much to give. My mind kept telling me to wait until I had an amount to give that wouldn’t be embarrassing to give…but my heart knew better. I began with change, a dime and some nickels. I refused to be embarrassed, it was all I had, and I gave it with great thankfulness.
That first step started me on a journey of learning about the provision of the Lord. I am so thankful I took that first step.
You simply must start where you are, with what you have. It is God who gives the increase. He is the one who multiplies – but He can’t bless what we don’t give Him.
Luke 16:10 says; If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. (NLT)
Has God put a dream in your heart that seems so big you don’t even know where to start?
That is the way it was with me. Yet, as I prayed and sought the Lord, He gave me the first step. That’s all. One step. As I am faithful to take that one step, He will be faithful to bless it and give me the next step. One step at a time, I will reach my goal. All things are possible to me, why? Because I believe. I believe in His faithfulness.
I realize it is not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit of the Lord. I also realize that we have a part to play. We must resolve to take the steps He leads us to take. And we must daily seek His face about what He would have us to do that day, concerning our dream. We cannot just sit and wait for it to happen…we have a part to play.
We are the one who must take the steps. If God is to bless all the work of our hands, they must be doing something. Therefore, every single day, do something…regardless of how small…toward your dream becoming a reality. Every single day.
How about you? Has God put something big, beyond your ability big, in your heart? If so, begin today – take that first step. Start where you are. Do what you can, with what you have. He will bless all the work of your hands. He who has called you is faithful, and He will complete what He has begun in you. And…He is rejoicing to see the work begin.
Meditate on this:
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord. Colossians 3:23
